Trash the Dress and Fancy Dress Swim: A marriage made in heaven! : ) Did you know you can help end poverty, hunger, and disease in the world while having fun trashing your dress? (Search “trash the dress” on YouTube if you’re not familiar with this phenomenon.) The name grabs attention but it’s really not about destroying dresses but about having fun and doing something memorable in your fancy dress that often gets worn only once.
We at Church in Ocean Park have been doing Fancy Dress Swims to Make Poverty History since 2006. We had a great time joining the first Santa Monica 4th of July Parade with Fancy Dress Swim following in 2007:

Check it out and our blog entry on the fun. We made the Against Malaria News. Making a splash in style.
Another adventure was the first Mother’s Day Fancy Dress Swim ONE San Diego, May 10, 2009 at the Oceanside Pier. You can learn more here:

and here: http://alturl.com/58ic
Both Fancy Dress Swims have continued annually since then. See our blog entries for more.
To sponsor us in our current Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria happening after we cavort down Main St. in the Santa Monica 4th of July Parade click here: http://www.WorldSwimAgainstMalaria.com/SM4thofJulyFancyDressSwim2011
The World Swim Against Malaria site makes it easy create your own swim page and to invite people to sponsor you by making a contribution to buy treated bed-nets, the most effective way to prevent malaria. Every $5 buys a net. The more contributions you get, the more bed-nets, the fewer people exposed to malaria, the world’s single largest killer of children and pregnant mothers. You can post your picture in your fancy clothes and then upload photos of your Fancy Dress Swim or Trash the Dress session after you’ve done it. For all the fun you have you can help save lives in the process.
If you are in Southern California you can also join us for the (ONE) Santa Monica 4th of July Parade and Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria at the end of the parade route. Or we can join you in your event. We use the unusual spectacle of going in the ocean, fountain, or pool in fancy dress(es) to encourage people to sponsor us so World Swim Against Malaria can distribute as many bed-nets as possible. (www.one.org for more information on ONE founded by Bono of U2.)
