July 4th Parade and Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria

June 26, 2009 by churchinoceanpark

Come join ONE Santa Monica

Amanda splashdance

in the Santa Monica July 4th Parade

& Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria

Help eradicate malaria. How?

Join the Church in Ocean Park and ONE Santa Monica for an Independence Day

parade and Fancy Dress Swim! Put on your Sunday finest, parade down Main Street,

over to the beach and go swimming!

July 4      9:00 am for parade, 11:30 am for Fancy Dress Swim

Yes, participants really will be wearing suits and dresses and wading into the

Pacific but fear not, this fanciful event involves more of a dip than an actual swim.

Picture the Polar Bear Plunge in mid-summer with clothes!

Each five dollars donated buys a mosquito bed net and protects a child from

contracting malaria. Coordinator Herley Jim Bowling says “Malaria is one of the

planet’s most deadly diseases, killing the equivalent of seven jumbo jets full of

children daily. With World Swim Against Malaria, 100% of donations received go to

purchasing bed nets.” http://www.WorldSwimAgainstMalaria.com/OneSantaMonica

Meet for the parade in front of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium at least by 9

AM with downloaded signed waiver https://oceanpark.net/opa/content/parade/. The

parade lines up on Main north of Pico and starts at 9:30. Or meet us at the beach at

the end of the parade, parking lot 5, southern-most of Santa Monica Beach.

Even if you can’t attend, by donating $5 you buy 1 malaria net for a child’s bed

and save a life.

Sponsors include: The Dream Project, Holy Guacamole, The Velvet Gypsy,

and Church in Ocean Park.

Contact: Herley Jim,  herleyjim@yahoo.com or 310-496-2124 cell.

Wildly fun Fancy Dress Swim

July 16, 2008 by churchinoceanpark

Our Fancy Dress Swim to Make Poverty History on Sunday, July 13, was fabulous! We had a great time with each other in our fancy attire on the beach and in the waves with warmer water than usual as we brought attention to the ONE Campaign  and the Millennium Development Goals. Margaret Molloy, photographer with the Santa Monica Mirror, photographed us. We’ll have a link to her photos and any story when available. David Acevedo came and filmed us even though being rear-ended on the way totaled his car (glad you are okay)(film link when available). That’s dedication! Fran Lyness, who was both support and participant also took photos that you can view at www.flickr.com/photos/herleyim. In addition to collecting some signatures on the ONE Declaration we also distributed flyers explaining what we were doing and listing our upcoming ONE Santa Monica events.

Other thank yous to: Ashley Muncaster, who brought David to the beach after the accident and was part of the Fancy Swim team; Brandy Jones and David Tayar, our film people who arranged for David Acevedo to film us; other members of the fabulous Fancy Dress Swim team led by Rev. Janet, including Marlene De La O, Susan and Matilda Loughmiller, Wendy and Lucca Jazz Winston, Gaile Price, Woody Bronner, Patience and John Brennan, Herley Jim Bowling, and Maribeth Dougherty and John; and our dedicated support team including Mary Getlein and Fred Whitlock.

Nothing like being on the beach on a sunny day with people you love, doing good by playing, dancing in the waves in a fancy dress with the skirt swirling around like kelp or sea foam, and watching the sailboats and pelicans go by. No dolphins this time.

Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria wet and fun!

April 24, 2008 by churchinoceanpark

The Fancy Dress Swim Against Malaria went well and was a lot of fun. Thanks for your support! We’ve raised over $1,500 – over 300 long-lasting insecticidal bed-nets (LLINs) – with money still coming in. The total on the web-page www.worldswimagainstmalaria.com/churchop is lower because that doesn’t include the money raised offline.  You can see some of the photos there and here:

A small film crew came to the swim and filmed us and interviewed us about what we were doing. When they’ve finished editing it we’ll have a link.

Join the ONE LA/Santa Monica Fancy Dress Swim

January 20, 2008 by churchinoceanpark

Ready to have fun while saving lives? Church in Ocean Park has initiated the ONE LA/Santa Monica Fancy Dress Swim joining the World Swim Against Malaria on April 5, 12-2 PM, at the Culver City Municipal Plunge. The goal is one million swimmers around the world on or around that day raising money for treated bed-nets at $5 per net to prevent malaria, still the biggest killer of children and pregnant women in the world. Every $5 helps save a life.

Unlike swims that get sponsors for a number of laps or distance we are getting sponsors for the spectacle of going in the (heated) pool in fancy dress (including, for inspiration but not to limit your imagination or costume, formals, prom dresses, cocktail dresses, bridesmaid dresses, wedding gowns, quinceanera gowns, fancy ball gowns…). If you don’t get sponsors beforehand you can just show up on April 5 and sponsor yourself. Guys and girls can wear dresses or whatever captures your fancy. This is a swim for all ages so just make sure your costume is family-friendly. Join us!

You can sign up for the swim by going to: http://www.one.org/event/GeneralEvent/369. Just follow the instructions to sign up. You can also sponsor one of our fancy swimmers or the group online at www.worldswimagainstmalaria.com/churchop, or by calling 310-399-1630.

* To sponsor by check rather than cash or online, make payable to Against Malaria Foundation. Please add reference WSAM08 3597 so the money can be assigned to our swim.

First ONE Sabbath at Church in Ocean Park

November 27, 2007 by churchinoceanpark

We began our ONE Sabbath with Joy Buckley, one of our resident poets, reading the Millennium Development Goals as they appear on the ONE.org website. ONE is a U.S.-based campaign linked to the international effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The Millennium Development Goals set a framework for how nations can work together to end extreme poverty. Ron Maxson read a quote from Bono about poverty being a justice issue.

The first to speak after the readings was Bob Gordh who discussed The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs. Rev. Janet McKeithen talked about the spiritual dimensions of poverty and ONE. Herley Jim rounded out the presentations talking about ONE successes and what you can do. This included signing the ONE Declaration, participating in the LA ONE Volunteer and Advocacy Training on December 8 (announcement elsewhere on this blog), and World Swim Against Malaria on April 5 (where we will take to the water in fancy dress again).

A number of people responded thoughtfully during the community sharing. We sang several songs throughout, led by Elinor Graham and Bob Gordh led us in singing Bob Marley’s “One Love”.
